Survey 2: Officials stand firm not to leave Pamarawan; SB, SK state some contrasting views
Hon. Pablito Samaniego Jr., Barangay Councilor shared his views about the issues in Pamarawan. According to him, the high tide doesn't greatly affect them because it only lasts for about 2 to 3 hours. As per him, they can recover easily since they are used to it. Pamarawan citizens tend to be resilient due to the natural calamities it experienced. Other problems the councilor stated were climate change and of course the ongoing construction of the airport. He also shared how this affects the livelihood of the residents particularly the fishermen. Based on his own experience, he lost a big part of his 'baklad' that produces fish affected his income, wherein from 4, 000 pesos down to 1, 000. On the other hand. he said that waste management is not a problem in the community. Nevertheless he emphasized that it is not difficult to live in the island if and only if people will thrive and try their best to survive in every kind of situation.
To counter
some statements of Councilor Samaniego, Hon. Johnbert Caballero, Sangguniang
Kabataan (SK) Kagawad said that Pamarawan is facing critical problem about
waste disposal as the island becomes a dump of garbage coming from different
areas nearby. He added that the community lacks in services to dispose the
garbage. SK Caballero also said that Samaniego's stand about the state of
education in the island is not that accurate. Although majority of the youth
are in school still there are some who cannot afford schooling due to
unfortunate situation. Nevertheless, both officials agreed that Pamarawan is a
home, and people in the island do interventions to keep their community intact.
Their vision is to make Pamarawan as one of the most friendly and welcoming
tourist spot amidst the problems they encounter.
