Mia Darlene N. Bulaong Citizen and Community Journalism- Midterm

All along hearing those words I thought that they are just the same and done by only professional journalists. And what I have learned in this subject was the role, definition and how to differentiate between citizen journalism and community journalism. Citizen journalism tackles about the people in the community experiences in their daily basis living within the community. It focuses more with citizens' point of view viewing specific issues within their community. While community journalism is done by professional journalists and depends on the standard of news values and reporting ideals. And at the end of the day, community and citizen journalism when combined will create a community that is aware of what is happening in the society. The citizens will become more active in participating with their democratic roles in the community.
2. I think in order to address societal concerns in a more precise manner, I will limit my attention to our community. Since flooding is a major problem in our barangay, most of the barangay nearby are always rebuilding their roadways thinking that it will be a great solution to get rid of flooding. With this, I will apply what we have learned from this course and start doing the procedures by simply asking and collecting experiences of every citizen the struggle they face when high tide and flood occurs at the same time. After addressing the struggle, it’s time to use the voice as a Sangguniang Kabataan official to speak up for people who don’t have the capability and courage to stand for what belongs to them—a comfortable community. By this, we are not only playing our roles as a journalist nor portraying the role of being an SK Official but also playing the function and relevance of Community Journalism.
