Midterm Questions:

1.Using your own words, compare citizen Journ to Community journalism. 5-10 sentences only

While it is common for people to confuse one with the other, several factors make citizen journalism and community journalism different.

The first and most prominent distinction lies behind the people writing the story. Citizen journalism, as its name suggests, is written by the people that make up a community. They don’t have a professional background in journalism, so they cannot be recognized as bona fide journalists. On the other hand, community journalism is handled by professionals with in-depth knowledge about how journalism works.

The second distinction is where or how it is published. Citizen journalism is published on social media platforms as it is more accessible and more engaging to the public. And while community journalism can also be posted in such a place aside from newspapers and radio, it has a more formal approach and is posted under the name of recognized and verified news channels.

Lastly, factuality. News stories go through a tedious process before it is published, but because citizens don’t adhere to journalistic standards, they are more susceptible to misinformation.

2. Which social issues in the in the pH can be address by Community journalism. Explain by how and why. 5-10 sentences only.

Obnoxiously loud karaoke sessions. Karaoke is undoubtedly a part of Filipino culture, typically serving as the primary source of entertainment on special occasions. However, such practice led Filipinos to think that it is justifiable to disrupt the neighborhood with their shrill voices as long as they are tending to their self-gratification.

Recently, there has been an influx of karaoke usage in our community even if there’s no occasion. If not karaoke, it’s the booming speakers that interrupt the peace of our place. It is not uncommon to hear complaints regarding this issue. I myself encounter difficulties doing school tasks that require speaking due to the background noise overpowering my voice.

Despite several calls for action to address this matter, the local government has failed to hold these people accountable. However, If enough coverage is given to this ongoing community issue, people will be encouraged to speak up and work together to make the local government regulate the usage of karaoke.
