Jelmer C. Cabanza Citizen and Community Journalism

BAJ 2B

  1. Community Journalism and Citizen journalism are two different things. Community journalism is a collective effort of a certain group of people to find solutions in solving the problem they face on their own. The community knows what they need. It is also a way of tapping other people to be concerned on what other problems are even if it is not affecting them directly.

Citizen Journalism on the other hand is giving information to other people from a person. They are not journalists but trained to be journalists-like to gather information then convey it to another person.  They are in a community to help professional journalists find the news or whatever is happening in the community where they are in.

Both of the two carry information to help other people to be informed, not just by the people who work in a professional news organization. They are the other  source of information that is, somewhat, reliable.

  1. A month ago, there was a photo circulating on Facebook Meta that there is a resort in the middle of the preserved area in Bohol — Chocolate Hills. Many got shocked by this news for Chocolate Hills is a tourist attraction, a landmark that Bohol is known for and yet it was destroyed for this kind of act by an elitist. The Captain's Peak is the name of the resort that got viral. It was posted by a Facebook user that tapped other people to have concern on what had happened to Chocolate Hills. This kind of movement is community journalism for many people now who are engaged to participate and care about the community they are in. Along with this also, it helped other professional journalists too, who later found out that it is not just one infrastructure that destroyed the Chocolate Hills but there is a bunch of it. And now, a lot of people are now part of the movement to protect nature, specifically the Chocolate Hills, by stopping forever the operation of these resorts and to not let this happen again to further preserve the natural habitat of many species and its beauty.
