Citizen and Community Journalism Midterm

1.Using your own words, compare Citizen Journalism to Community journalism. (5-10 sentences only)

Community Journalism and citizen journalism are related types of journalism, but these are what I think makes them different from each other.

Community journalism is a bigger type than citizen journalism. It is also more of a specific area or region based journalism, which includes daily life, struggles and happenings of the people within a community that is continuously there. This type of journalism also includes the feel of feeling or being part of the situation, which makes being more connected to the specific community.

On the other hand, Citizen Journalism, usually is a voluntary way of giving information in relation to the media and no proper training is done here. The information can be gathered from blogs or social media, which still need to be verified by professional media.

In conclusion, community journalism is a journalist being there in the situation itself and feeling it in order to make stories. While on citizen journalism, a journalist gets information from the citizens that can be used in making stories.

2. Which social issues in the PH can be addressed by Community journalism. Explain how and why? (5-10 sentences only)

Not all issues are seen in the media, and some are really not being cared about. Citizen journalism is one way of making these issues be seen. Some Philippine issues that can be solved through citizen journalism are rights violation, corruption, social injustice and education crisis. Since citizen journalism is done by people in the community, they can show or share stories about what is happening in their community by posting it on social media or by making a blog about it. For example, a lot of people are using social media nowadays, and there are issues or stories that go viral by just people commenting or sharing those. Hence, those platforms can help to raise awareness to officials or higher authorities regarding what issue is posted. It may not be solved immediately, but being aware of what's happening is already a big help, especially when the locals or anyone else could help even in just small steps.
