Citizen Journalism

1.  Differentiate citizen and community journalism

  • Citizen journalism focuses on individual reports. They can disseminate information or write about something they think merits public attention. Anyone can become a journalist—not as a career but by doing the same job as a journalist. Citizen journalism is an "individual work" since it is mainly carried out by a single person who distinctively disseminates the news. Videos on Facebook or TikTok that feature people who witness remarkable events or disseminate crucial information online serve as an excellent example. As citizens, we must inform one another about events occurring in our communities, particularly those that the media chooses not to report on or does not cover. Citizen journalists also have more freedom since they create their content and don't have many rules to follow.

  • Community Journalism is a form of Journalism that focuses on certain areas. It's like normal news coverage but focuses on the local area, this is to make the news closer to people. to report news that can affect them and that they need to know. People are more interested in learning this kind of news because this is what their life mostly involves. Community journalism is an important component of journalism since it brings us closer to people's lives and makes news an integral part of their everyday lives. People are becoming more aware of the value of news in their lives through Community Journalism. Nowadays, people pay less attention to the news because of social media or because they do not believe it is relevant. News is usually about what is going on in the country, but with community journalism, they can learn about the news that is relevant to them and their community, which they care about.

2. Choose a uniquely local issue that you think can be resolved through community journalism, and why.

  • One of the primary problems at the moment is the increasing number of pertussis cases in central Visayas and central Luzon. Information about the symptoms of the virus, its spread, and how to stop it can be widely disseminated through community journalism. Since community journalism primarily covers local communities, I believe it could readily disseminate information about the virus if we travel to those remote areas that might not have access to the media to keep them updated on developments. Just as they said, you have to start at the bottom to solve a problem; if a virus like COVID-19 was taken seriously when it first appeared in the small town of Wuhan, it may not have spread as widely. The media cannot cover all stories, so community journalism plays an important role in ensuring that all news is covered and that people in all communities have access to it. Though cliche, disseminating information indeed is one of our most powerful weapons in dealing with a problem like this.
